Black Friday – the shopping day that surpasses all shopping days – but how did Black Friday begin?
History of Black Friday
It was President Lincoln who designated Thanksgiving to be the last Thursday in November. The Friday after Thanksgiving was not called Black Friday at the time though. The title Black Friday at the time was associated with the date September 24, 1869. On this date gold panic was caused by the efforts of two speculators in cornering the gold market on the New York Gold Exchange (obtaining sufficient control of a particular stock, commodity, or other asset in an attempt to manipulate the market price).
Macy’s Department Store held its first Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City in 1927, inspired by the the Canadian store Eaton and its Thanksgiving Day parade. The start of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade symbolized the success of the 1920s.
People began calling in sick the day after Thanksgiving in the 1950s – enjoying a four-day weekend. During this time, they got a head start on their holiday shopping. In 1966 the term Black Friday was coined for the big shopping day the day after Thanksgiving came. The term was used by the Philadelphia Police Department to describe the traffic jams and frenzy in the downtown department stores.
